When we ask "who am I?" we must first know that there is more to us than just the vessel (the body) we happen to be in, and that this vessel includes our thoughts and emotions. They are in reality bodily functions. Thoughts are a product of patterns of synapses in the brain. Emotions are caused by chemical reactions in the brain and responses to hormonal fluctuations .
The mind is useless at comprehending the deeper inner self and who we actually are. The mind can only attach labels; it can't comprehend it or articulate it, because it is a part of the physical, external world so can only comprehend the physical. But there is more to us. So when asking "who am I?" don't try to answer it. Become unattached to the labels that identify your external existence. Just be .
